NPA RESPONDS TO SATURDAY’S KILLING OF TWO NYC POLICE OFFICERS

“We at National People’s Action offer our deepest sympathy to the families of officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos who were shot to death Saturday in Brooklyn, NY. This senseless act of violence is a tragedy. Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and communities that grieve the loss of both men.

“At the same time, this aberrant killing of police officers must not be conflated with the repeated police practice of killing unarmed Black men. Government officials and the public universally condemn the killing of police officers, while failing to put an end to police killings of unarmed Black men.

“We are inspired by the growing movement that has declared “Black Lives Matter” in the face of a criminal justice system and society that devalues and dehumanizes Black people. Protesters are calling on our nation to treat the loss of Black lives at the hands of the police with the same gravity and seriousness as the killing of police officers. Only then will the idea of equal protection under the law have meaning in our society.

“We unequivocally condemn officials who attempt to use these shootings to vilify the peaceful Black Lives Matter protests. The leadership of this movement is committed to non-violent direct action to produce positive social change and has maintained that commitment despite the irresponsible allegations made against them. The continuation of their work is necessary to achieve real public safety through the elimination of racially biased police practices.”
