SENATOR CRUZ IS WRONG (AGAIN)
CLEAN POWER PLAN WILL BENEFIT AFRICAN AMERICAN AND LATINO COMMUNITIES

Washington, DC -- Today, Jordan Estevao, Senior Strategist at National People's Action, issued the following statement in light of Senator Ted Cruz's hearing titled "Overregulation harms minorities":

"Senator Ted Cruz claims that safeguards designed to protect our families and our children's future harm people of color. Nothing could be further from the truth. Air pollution caused by coal-fired power plants is a direct threat to the health of African American and Latino children. Not only does the Clean Power Plan directly address carbon pollution, but if implemented properly by states, it could economically empower people of color and low-income communities, by creating hundreds of thousands of jobs and saving millions of dollars in utility costs.

"The Clean Power Plan rule explicitly requires states to solicit meaningful input from communities of color on implementation of the Clean Power Plan. Organizations like National People's Action, Climate Justice Alliance, We Act for Environmental Justice and others are working to ensure that state implementation of the Clean Power Plan maximizes benefits to the most impacted communities. Meanwhile Senator Cruz is trying to pull the wool over our communities' eyes and protect the pollution industry."
