NPA Statement on the George Zimmerman Verdict

Statement of Bree Carlson, Director of the Structural Racism Program:

"We are outraged and saddened by the Florida court's decision to find George Zimmerman not guilty of second degree murder for shooting and killing Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17 year old African American boy. The fact that the man who committed the crime will go unpunished is without question a symptom of a deep sickness in our country. It cannot be understood outside of the context of hundreds of years of institutionalized racism that produce racial inequity in every aspect of our society. It is clear we have much work to do to realize the promise of fairness that is at the core of our shared values as a country.

As an organization dedicated to fighting structural racism, National People's Action recognizes that we must all work for a judicial system free of the devastating racial disparities that make the outcome in this case far too common. We must fight against the corporate interests behind the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) who pervert democracy by funneling corporate donations to buy the votes of lawmakers and put dangerous laws, like 'Stand Your Ground' and Shoot First, on the books in states across this country. Today we stand together with allies around this nation in our belief that, as a country, we can and must do better."
